How an Allergy Works

An allergy happens when my body reacts to something that is usually okay for other people. My body gets confused by tree nuts and treats them like something harmful.

Nobody Is at Fault

My body is allergic to tree nuts. That is how my body works, and it is nobody's fault.

How a Reaction Might Feel

If I eat tree nuts, I might feel different. I might feel itchy, have a tummy ache, or feel sick. Sometimes a reaction feels different for different people, so I tell an adult if I feel strange.

Foods That Might Have Nuts

Tree nuts can be hiding in some foods. Cookies, cakes, candy, granola bars, ice cream, and some breakfast cereals might have nuts in them.

Ask Before Eating

To stay safe, I do not eat food unless a trusted adult says it is safe for me. I ask first, even if the food looks yummy.

Keep Snacks Separate

I do not share food or trade snacks with friends. I eat the snacks that my family or teacher says are safe.

If I Eat Nuts by Accident

If I think I ate nuts by accident, I stop eating and tell an adult right away. The adult will know what to do to help me.

Tell Adults About My Allergy

I tell adults about my allergy, like my family, my Teacher, and helpers at school. I can say, “I have a nut allergy. I cannot eat nuts.”

Tell Ayana Too

I can tell my friend Ayana about my allergy too. Telling my friends and my Teacher helps them know how to help me stay safe.

Ways I Stay Safe

I am learning how to take care of my body. Telling adults and asking before I eat are smart ways to stay safe.
